Fortune, the American global business magazine founded in New York in 1929, is a leading brand that regularly publishes ranked lists. These include the Fortune 500 which has ranked companies by revenue since 1955, and the 100 Best Companies to Work For, published annually since 1998. 

Great Place to Work, a Fortune partner, states that the 100 Best Companies proves that “employee experience is not only compatible with profitability – it’s vital to achieving fiscal goals.” 

In this post, we dig into what makes the top 10 of the top 100 companies ranked by Fortune so special. 

While Fortune doesn’t make its own 100 best list (for obvious reasons), Great Place to Work reveals that Fortune is also a great place to work! According to the Great Place to Work 2021 Global Employee Engagement Study, 70% of Fortune employees acknowledge this to be the case. Typically, only about 57% of employees at other companies vote that their place of employment is a great place to work.

  • 91% of employees are given a lot of responsibility
  • 89% say they are proud to tell others they work there
  • 88% are willing to give extra to get the job done
  • 85% acknowledge that management trusts people to do a good job without watching over their shoulders
  • 84% say they are able to take time off from their jobs when they believe it is necessary

All in all, this indicates a positive employee experience (EX) with the company. But what exactly is EX? 

What is Employee Experience?

Employee experience (commonly referred to simply as EX) comprises everything employees encounter throughout their journey within a specific organization. From the moment prospective employees consider a job opening to well after they leave the company, every interaction — whether material or relational — shapes their perception and experience of the organization. Just as customer experience is crucial for external stakeholders, workforce experience is the HR equivalent. A leading Information Technology (IT) company based in California, it is clear that Cisco really cares about the people who work for them. A highlight for employees includes days throughout the year when Cisco shuts down to let employees recharge. “Cisco also cares about the environment, and social justice, and has a strong commitment to diversity and equality,” employees say.  

Additionally, Cisco prioritizes employee development and learning. They invest in training and development, with an average of 8.6 hours spent per full-time employee (FTE) in fiscal 2023.

They emphasize clarity, transparency, and agility in performance management, moving away from traditional models to an inclusive approach. And they encourage weekly check-ins between managers and employees via a tool called Team Space, promoting communication and feedback.

Everybody’s heard of Hilton hotels, even if they haven’t stayed in one. So, it stands to reason that Hilton is in the hospitality industry. What you may not know is that they have ranked as a best 100 company for the past six years.
